NBA App Updated Sign-Up Experience (Spec)

The NBA App provides users with access to live games and exclusive content like game highlights and news.

Problem: Users need a way to sign up for the NBA App that is more benefit-driven, clear, and concise. The current process isn’t as user-friendly and can cause users to quit the process.

Goal/Solution: Revamp the app’s sign-up experience by incorporating UX best practices and communicating clearly to help the user move through the experience.

My role: UX Writer/Content Designer

What I did:

  • Wrote a short, benefit-driven tagline and NBA App description.

  • Changed the button text from “Get Started” to “Sign Up” to be more clear to the user as to what they are about to do. “Get Started” can feel ambiguous.

  • Changed the button to blue (in the same color family as the NBA logo) to stand out.

  • Changed “Sign In” to “Log In” so users don’t get confused with the action to “Sign Up.”

After

What I did:

  • Added a back button and label that’s consistent with iOS’ design to create a more familiar and comfortable interface.

  • Updated the headline to be more accurate, concise, and action oriented.

  • Removed descriptive text as it can distract the user from completing the task and doesn’t add value.

  • Removed option to “Sign In” because the user had the option in the previous screen.

After

What I did:

  • Added a back button and label that’s consistent with iOS’ design to create a more familiar and comfortable interface.

  • Moved the users selected favorite teams (in this example the Houston Rockets and LA Clippers) to the top of the list for easy access.

  • Updated the button color for consistency.

Conclusion

The changes I made to the sign-up experience reduce friction, clearly state benefits and value, and overall create an improved experience — which is critical as this is the first interaction users have with the app.
